What to know
The September 21 Internal Revenue Bulletin publishes final regulations for the deduction of qualifying personal vehicle-loan interest. The statutory benefit covers tax years 2025 to 2028; the final regulations list November 9, 2026, as their effective date.
The rules generally concern eligible new vehicles with final assembly in the United States and qualifying purchase loans incurred after December 31, 2024. Used vehicles and lease payments do not qualify for this deduction. Other requirements apply.
The annual interest deduction is capped at $10,000 per return and phases down above modified adjusted gross income of $100,000, or $200,000 for joint filers. A deduction reduces taxable income, so its dollar value depends on the taxpayer. Keep the VIN and lender records; do not treat the advertised maximum as cash back.
