What to know
Cox Automotive’s October 12 report puts estimated third-quarter U.S. EV sales at 262,649, up 6.1% from the second quarter. It describes that as the strongest quarterly volume in a year.
The same estimate is 39.5% below the third quarter of 2025, when buyers rushed to use expiring federal incentives. EVs accounted for about 6.4% of new-vehicle sales in Q3 2026, up from 5.8% in Q2.
Our take: a market can recover from a low point while remaining below an unusually strong earlier period. Be wary of headlines that leave out the baseline. For a purchase decision, compare actual offers, charging access, and the ownership costs of the vehicles on your shortlist.
