The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV has an easy headline: up to 1,153 horsepower. The more interesting question arrives when the launch is over. Can an electric AMG build a character of its own, even while its software reaches for a familiar V8 soundtrack? Give the hardware the last word.
The shape makes the introduction
AMG revealed the SUV on October 17 and identifies it as a 2028 U.S. model, with arrivals expected in summer 2027. The vertical grille, low roof, broad shoulders and six circular taillights give it a deliberately assertive identity.
Our take: the proportions are more persuasive than the illuminated jewelry. A large vehicle needs a clear shape before it needs another lighting signature. This one gives us something to look at from the side as well as the front.
Keep the acceleration comparison honest
Mercedes lists three U.S. versions: GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63, with peak outputs of 536, 805 and 1,153 hp. Its estimated 0 to 60 mph times without rollout are 4.1, 3.0 and 2.6 seconds, respectively. The GT 63’s 2.4-second headline excludes the first foot of movement.
Those are manufacturer estimates, not our tests. Pick one timing method before comparing cars. Then ask what happens after the first launch: repeatability, brake feel and confidence when the road becomes demanding are more useful questions than shaving a qualifier out of a headline.
The numbers, and how sure we are
Manufacturer U.S. estimates without rollout; GT 63’s 2.4-second alternative excludes the first foot. Peak power is not sustained output. No independent DrivrShield test.

The cabin offers controls and a performance of its own
On the GT 55 and GT 63, AMGFORCE Sport+ recreates V8 sounds, simulates shifts and uses seat shakers. Active pitch-and-roll control is standard on the GT 63 and optional on the GT 55. Rear-wheel steering reaches up to six degrees at low speeds.
We understand the appeal of giving a new kind of powertrain a familiar rhythm. The question is whether those cues help you understand the car or simply make it entertaining. During a test drive, try the available settings and pay attention to how steering, braking and body motion communicate. We have not driven it.
The charging peak is only part of the trip
The GT 55 and GT 63 use a 128-kWh usable battery. Mercedes quotes peak DC charging up to 710 kW under suitable conditions; its figures are preliminary. That peak is not a guarantee of the power you will receive throughout an ordinary stop.
For a real journey, the useful comparison is the charging curve and the time spent at compatible stations on your route. Confirm the final U.S. range information and charging conditions before making a trip plan. A spectacular peak number deserves context just as much as a spectacular acceleration time.
Our take: give the hardware the last word
An electric AMG should earn its badge through control, consistency and involvement. The soundtrack can add enjoyment; it should not have to carry the argument. We are most interested in whether the car feels composed and communicative when the novelty has worn off.
The design and engineering give it a promising brief. The verdict belongs to the finished U.S. vehicle, an actual drive and an actual price. Let the recreated V8 start a conversation. Let the hardware answer it.
Compare like-for-like acceleration methods and final U.S. charging information. Use a test drive to judge the controls and chassis, not only the soundtrack.
