What it is
FLHSMV’s fee schedule lists base motor-vehicle registration (license tax) amounts that vary by vehicle class and weight; other statutory fees also apply. For private automobiles the base vehicle tax is $14.50 (net weight up to 2,499 lb), $22.50 (2,500–3,499 lb), or $32.50 (3,500 lb or more). Trucks up to 5,000 lb use the same three brackets by weight. Original/replacement license plate fee is $28.00. A $225 Initial Registration Fee (Florida Statutes §320.072) is due when the owner does not have a Florida plate (or record of a Florida plate in their name) to transfer to the newly acquired vehicle; FLHSMV and procedure RS-30 describe when the IRF applies and when exemptions exist (for example certain class codes, and situations where a prior Florida plate can be transferred). Total registration cost on a deal worksheet is therefore typically base tax + plate fee (if a new plate is issued) + IRF when applicable + smaller statutory add-ons (service/FRVIS and similar), not the base tax alone.
