What it is
Florida’s general state sales tax rate is 6%. On a motor-vehicle purchase, Florida sales and use tax plus any applicable discretionary sales surtax is due on the taxable sales price unless an exemption applies. Most counties also impose a discretionary sales surtax; for motor vehicles and mobile homes the applicable surtax rate is determined by the purchaser’s home address on the registration or title, not by where the dealer is located. For these transactions, discretionary sales surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of the purchase price. County surtax rates vary and are published by the Florida Department of Revenue on Form DR-15DSS (updated yearly). Separately itemized state-mandated fees for titling, licensing, registering, or recording a lien are not subject to sales tax; dealer preparation, settlement/closing fees, freight to the dealer, commissions, and other dealer-required charges generally are part of the taxable sales price.
