Fee Check
Sales tax on trade-ins - national overview
Most states tax the price after a dealer trade-in credit; a few tax the full selling price even with a trade.
Printed on worksheets as: Trade-In Tax Credit · Trade-In Allowance
- Who sets it
- The state or county
- Required by law
- Varies by state
- Typical amount
- No honest figure to give: it varies by store. The number on your sheet is the number.
- Whose money
- A pass-through: the state sets the amount and the dealer remits it. Ask to see the state's schedule if the figure looks high.
The one question to ask
“In this state, is my sales tax calculated on the full price or on the price after my trade-in?”
Or, said plainly: “In this state, is tax calculated on the full price or on the price after my trade-in?”
What it is
When you trade a vehicle at a dealership, states treat sales/use (or highway-use / title) tax differently. In many states the taxable base is the selling price minus the trade-in allowance (examples confirmed in primary sources: Texas Comptroller motor-vehicle sales tax on the trade difference at 6.25%; Florida Statutes §212.09; North Carolina G.S. §105-187.3 highway-use tax on retail value after trade-in). California is a major exception: CDTFA Publication 34 states the trade-in allowance cannot be excluded from the amount subject to tax - tax is on the full selling price. Georgia uses Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) instead of sales tax on most titled vehicles, and dealer sales reduce fair market value by the trade-in stated on the bill of sale. Always confirm your state's DOR/DMV rule before assuming a trade lowers tax. Private-party sales often have different trade-in rules than dealer sales.

The next step
This tool says something is in there. DrivrShield AI says what.
The math can prove a payment carries more than your figures explain. It cannot see the line items. Photograph the worksheet and DrivrShield AI reads every line — what each fee is, which ones your state actually requires, which are the dealer's to remove, and the exact words to ask.
