A VIN or a year, make and model. You get each NHTSA campaign: the date, the part, what the fix is, and the honest line about whether this particular car had it done.
Questions
- Is the repair really free?
- Yes. Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer of that brand, whether or not you bought the car there, for as long as the recall is open.
- Does this tell me whether my car was fixed?
- No tool can, from the model alone. Whether this particular car had the repair depends on the car: ask the seller for the repair order, or check the VIN on the manufacturer's site or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- It says the car couldn't be matched. Why?
- NHTSA files some cars under a name that differs from the badge (a 750i is filed under the 7 Series). When no name matches, the honest answer is that we couldn't match it, never that there are no recalls. Search the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Recall data comes from NHTSA, the U.S. government’s vehicle-safety agency, matched to the model name NHTSA uses for the car. Nothing you type is stored.
