What are Florida title and registration fees when you buy a car?
FLHSMV’s current fee for an electronic car title runs $75.25 to $85.25, plus $2 to record a lien if you finance, and a private car’s yearly registration tax and fees run $27.60 to $45.60 by weight. If you don’t have a Florida plate to move to the car, add $28 for a new plate and a one-time $225 initial registration fee.
Title fees
Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) publishes these totals for an electronic title (FLHSMV fee schedule, FEES-01, Rev. 04/26; FLHSMV fees):
| Your car | Title, no lien | Title with one lien |
|---|---|---|
| New, titled for the first time | $77.25 | $79.25 |
| Used, last titled or registered in another state or country | $85.25 | $87.25 |
| Used, already titled in Florida (a transfer) | $75.25 | $77.25 |
A few add-ons apply in some cases. FLHSMV adds $2.50 when a paper title is printed and mailed, and a fast title costs $10 more (FLHSMV fees). The new-car figure includes a $2.00 lemon law fee, which the fee schedule lists as one of its parts. Florida law requires the title application to be filed “within 30 days after the delivery of the motor vehicle,” and an applicant who misses that deadline pays a $20 fee (Fla. Stat. 319.23(6)(a); FLHSMV rate chart, HSMV 83140, Rev. 08/26).
Registration fees
FLHSMV’s rate chart gives the yearly “annual tax and other fees” for a private car by its weight (HSMV 83140, Rev. 08/26):
| Private car, by weight | Annual tax and other fees |
|---|---|
| Up to 2,499 pounds | $27.60 |
| 2,500 to 3,499 pounds | $35.60 |
| 3,500 pounds and up | $45.60 |
Light trucks pay the same three amounts on different weight bands: up to 1,999 pounds, 2,000 to 3,000, and 3,001 to 5,000. FLHSMV’s online fee schedule shows lower figures ($14.50, $22.50 and $32.50) because it lists “the base vehicle tax only” and notes that “other statutory fees apply” (FLHSMV fees).
On top of the registration, the rate chart says to “add $28.00 when metal license plate is to be issued” and “add $225.00 Initial Registration Fee when applicable.” If you move a valid Florida plate to the new car instead, the transfer is $4.10. A county branch office may add a $0.50 branch fee.
The $225 initial registration fee
FLHSMV says “the $225 Initial Registration Fee must be paid when the owner does not have a license plate or record of a license plate registered in their name for a vehicle he or she previously owned (in Florida), to transfer to a newly acquired vehicle” (FLHSMV). It applies to private cars, trucks of 5,000 pounds or less and motor homes. Exceptions include renewals, a plate transferred from a vehicle you’ve disposed of, certain title transfers between co-owners or to an immediate family member in the same household, certain military members and their families, and, on the owner’s affidavit, a registration transferred “from a vehicle that is not operational, is in storage, or will not be operated on the streets and highways of this state” (Fla. Stat. 320.072(2), (5); HSMV 83140).
Example: a new car, financed, first Florida plate
Example only. A new 3,200-pound car, financed, for a buyer with no Florida plate to transfer:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Electronic title with one lien | $79.25 |
| Registration, 2,500 to 3,499 pounds | $35.60 |
| New metal plate | $28.00 |
| Initial registration fee | $225.00 |
| Total | $367.85 |

What the dealer can charge for these
FLHSMV says dealers “can charge only the actual amount of fees paid for tax, tag and title transfer.” Some dealers add a processing or handling fee, and “if they do, they must disclose it separately” (FLHSMV). Those government fees also aren’t taxed (Florida DOR, GT-800030). What to say
“Please list the title, lien, registration, plate and initial registration fees separately from any dealer fee.”
“Which title fee did you use: new, out-of-state, or a Florida transfer?”
“I have a Florida plate to transfer from the car I’m trading in. Please take off the $225 fee and the new-plate fee.”
“What weight class did you use for the registration?”
“Is there a processing fee for the tag and title work? Please show it on its own line.”

FAQ
Why is there a $225 fee on my buyer’s order?
That’s Florida’s initial registration fee. FLHSMV charges it when you don’t have a Florida plate, or a record of one, from a vehicle you owned to transfer to the new car.
Can I skip the $225 fee by transferring my plate?
Moving a plate from a vehicle you’ve disposed of, such as your trade-in, is one of the listed exceptions. FLHSMV’s rate chart lists the plate transfer at $4.10.
Can a dealer charge more than the government fees for tag and title?
FLHSMV says dealers can charge only the actual fees paid. Some dealers add a processing or handling fee, and FLHSMV says it must be disclosed separately.
Are title and registration fees taxed?
No. Florida’s Department of Revenue says state-required fees for titling, registering or recording a lien aren’t subject to sales tax.
