Presentation revised October 24: shorter prose and a new photo sequence. Reporting and availability checks retain their October 23 cutoff.
BMW has moved the furniture and rewired the room. The fifth-generation 2027 X5 pairs a familiar straight-six with a dramatically different cabin. The 40 xDrive leads the U.S. rollout; the rest of the announced family follows later. This guide draws on published specifications and attributed reporting, not a DrivrShield road test.
First, know which X5 you’re buying
A new 2026 X5 can still be desirable dealer inventory, but it is the outgoing G05. The 2027 model is the redesigned G65. Ask for the model year, drivetrain and VIN before comparing a quote, incentive or specification. A badge reading “X5” is not enough.
BMW’s launch plan puts the 40 xDrive first in October 2026. The rear-drive 40 sDrive, plug-in hybrid 50e and electric iX5 are planned for Q1 2027, with a V8 M Performance model later. The timeline below separates arrival plans from cars available to buy.
Familiar proportions, a different expression
The long hood and upright glasshouse still say X5. The front is more graphic, with a narrower, taller kidney grille and “double X” lighting. Integrated door-release points make the surfacing cleaner; they also deserve a hands-on demonstration before you order.
Standard 21-inch wheels and optional larger designs change more than the look. Compare ride comfort and replacement-tire cost on the build you want. M Sport is an equipment and appearance package; it does not turn the six-cylinder into the forthcoming V8.
A wide-screen cabin you should try first
The 17.9-inch central screen, Panoramic Vision across the lower windshield and U.S. 40 xDrive’s standard 3D head-up display make a striking first impression. The steering wheel adds haptic controls. The important test is how quickly those interfaces let you finish an ordinary task.
While parked, enter a destination, change fan direction, adjust temperature and turn on seat heat. Try the console with your phone and drink bottle. Car and Driver’s October 22 first drive praised the smooth six and compliant ride while questioning several controls. Those are its driving impressions; we have not driven the car.
The small interactions matter
Open every door yourself and ask how the release works with a flat battery. Try the seating position and the upholstery you will actually order. Available comfort equipment can make a long journey pleasant, but a configurator cannot tell you whether the seat fits your back.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Ask which connected services are included, which expire after a trial and what the optional passenger display adds. More screens should earn their place by making the journey easier.
Start with the six; choose the rest by how you travel
The 40 xDrive uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, a 48-volt motor and an eight-speed automatic. BMW’s output and acceleration figures are shown below. This is a mild hybrid, with no plug or electric commuting range to budget around.
The 50e is the branch for regular charging and shorter daily trips; the iX5 makes charging part of every journey. Their announced specifications and prices are in the table. BMW’s iX5 horsepower differs between its launch release and U.S. product page, so the discrepancy stays visible rather than being silently resolved. Preliminary range and ideal charging times are manufacturer claims, not final EPA labels or a guarantee at your local charger.
Bring the people and things that travel with you
This is a two-row, five-seat SUV. BMW lists 27.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 67.7 with it folded. Those figures describe scale; they do not establish stroller fit or make different manufacturers’ measurement methods interchangeable. Bring the car seat, luggage or mobility aid you actually use.
The stated 7,710-pound maximum tow rating applies when properly equipped. Confirm the specific vehicle’s hitch equipment, payload and door-jamb ratings against a loaded trailer. Adaptive suspension is standard and two-axle air suspension optional; test the wheel-and-suspension combination on the roads you drive.
Keep the estimates in their proper place
BMW’s 24 city / 28 highway / 26 combined mpg figures for the 40 xDrive are preliminary. The original October 23 reporting found no 2027 X5 entry in the EPA database. Check the current window sticker before buying; a layout revision does not turn that dated check into a new certification.
For the 50e, savings depend on plugging in. For the iX5, map home, work and road-trip charging before committing. Keep U.S. estimates separate from WLTP figures, and include insurance, tires and charging installation in your budget.
Useful assistance still needs your attention
BMW lists Driving Assistant Plus as standard on the 40 xDrive and Highway Assistant as an option within its operating conditions. Hands-free does not mean attention-free: driver monitoring and readiness to take control remain part of the job. Ask for a demonstration and read the exact vehicle’s manual.
The original October 23 checks found no 2027 X5 NHTSA or IIHS rating. NHTSA’s selection for testing is not a result, and outgoing-generation ratings do not transfer automatically. The source links let you check for later results.
The starting price is only the first line
The 40 xDrive’s announced $72,100 MSRP plus $1,450 destination comes to $73,550 before tax, title, registration and dealer fees. The specification table keeps the later variants’ prices and arrival plans alongside their powertrains.
Get an itemized out-the-door quote for the exact VIN. Keep vehicle price, financing and trade-in separate; compare APR, term and total financed rather than a monthly payment alone. Check offers by ZIP code and model year. The October 23 reporting found offers for selected 2026 inventory, not a broadly advertised 2027 launch incentive.
The numbers, and how sure we are
BMW’s U.S. announcement and technical pages supply prices and preliminary figures; independent first-drive impressions are linked. “Announced” models are not all on sale. EPA certification and 2027 crash-test ratings were not yet posted when checked October 23, 2026.

Our take: make the cabin earn the upgrade
The 40 xDrive is the straightforward starting point for someone who wants the new X5 with a familiar gasoline routine. Wait for the 50e or iX5 if charging fits your life; consider sDrive if rear-wheel drive suits your needs. The V8 is a later decision with key details still unpublished.
The redesign’s most consequential change may be the one you touch, rather than the one under the hood. Book enough time to learn the controls, check passenger comfort and compare a written quote. If the interface feels fussy while parked, a bigger screen is unlikely to fix that on the road.
Your questions, answered
Is the new X5 a three-row SUV?
No. It is a two-row, five-seat SUV. BMW directs buyers needing a third row to the larger X7.
Does the BMW iX5 qualify for a tax credit?
Do not assume so. Eligibility depends on the specific vehicle, buyer and current tax rules. Verify current official guidance for the exact vehicle before counting a credit in your budget.
Are dealers marking up the 2027 X5?
We have not verified a market-wide markup or scarcity claim. Ask for the exact VIN and an itemized out-the-door quote, then compare local offers.
Start with the exact model year and drivetrain, test the new controls in person, and compare a written out-the-door price. The 2027 X5 40 xDrive is the first new-generation U.S. model; announced variants and outgoing 2026 inventory follow separate timelines and deal terms.
